10 Simple (but essential!) rules to getting GREAT skin and looking your best

looking after your skin

Rule number 1 – To drink more water, at least 2- 3 litres per day

Reason– Drinking water keeps your skin cleansed and hydrated, encouraging clear, fresh skin. By drinking water, you flush out toxins and eliminate the dirt that clogs the pores of your skin, giving you a healthier glow.

Rule number 2 – To get 8 hours of sleep a night

Reason – Not enough sleep accelerates the ageing process. During deep sleep, the rise in growth hormones allows damaged cells to become repaired. Without the deeper phases of sleep, this won’t occur, allowing daily small breakdowns to accumulate instead of being reversed overnight. This results in more noticeable signs of ageing. Tip – the hormone peaks around 11pm so be sure to be asleep for then.

Rule number 3 – To remove all makeup before bed

Reason – Wearing the day’s makeup whilst sleeping can result in unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment. They attach easily onto makeup and cause the breakdown of healthy collagen, which results in fine lines on the skin.

Rule number 4 – To eat a healthy balanced diet

Reason – Eating a healthy diet can provide some very real look good benefits, such as smoothing wrinkles, giving hair a glossy shine and strengthening flimsy nails. Your diet directly affects your day-to-day appearance and plays a significant role in how well you age.

It has been reported that beauty foods are foods that contain high concentrations of the minerals sulphur, silicon, zinc, iron and/or magnesium. These foods will have an alkalizing reaction with your body, anti-parasitical effects and contain high levels of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Rule number 5 – To avoid sugar as though it were poison

Reason – For the first time a direct link has been established between the amount of sugar circulating in the blood and how old a person looks. Scientists from the Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, and Unilever in the UK, measured the blood sugar levels of 600 men and women aged between 50 and 70.

So, here’s the technical part – fundamentally, what happens is that sugar attaches itself to any protein in the body and produces harmful molecules called ‘advanced glycation end products’. These reduce the effectiveness of elastin and collagen, proteins in the skin that help maintain its youthful appearance and increase the levels of wrinkles!

Usually collagen bulks out the skin and gives it a younger plump look. Elastin gives the skin recoil so that when you smile or frown your skin goes back to how it was. If you persistently eat a high-sugar diet, then as a result, the collagen and elastin will become more rigid, so it will become easier for wrinkles to form and the skin will lose that youthful plumpness. It also makes it harder for the cells in the skin to repair normal damage.

Rule number 6 – To gain inner beauty confidence

Reason – True beauty is being the best possible version of yourself, inside and out. Make a little room inside yourself for a little mindfulness.

Rule number 7- To lay off the coffee

Reason-Moisture is important for maintaining healthy, plump and glowing skin and the caffeine in coffee dries it out!  Avoid drinking more than a cup or two of coffee throughout the day; instead, opt for herbal tea or hydrating coconut waters. A great way to start each day is with freshly prepared juice and green tea with fresh honey. Keep a water bottle with you always — that way it’s easier to remember to sip throughout the day!

Rule number 8- For skin that glows, do some cardio

Reason-By doing regular working out (about 3 – 4 times a week, for at least 10 minutes), blood flow is accelerated and it brings fresh oxygen and nutrients to the skin! A bonus is that blood carries toxins—including free radicals—away from the skin and into the body’s detox system in the liver. That means skin is refreshed, regenerated and cleaned from the inside out.

Rule number 9- Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

Reason- By exfoliating daily it can have an enormous impact on the texture of your skin as it clears away the dead skin, pollution and environmental toxins that accumulate on the surface of your skin very day. In addition, exfoliation, kick starts collagen production, accelerated cellular renewal and preps the skin to improve absorption skin products.

Rule number 10-Understand that our skin starts to age when we hit 18.

A preventative antiaging program is the best way to go as the benefits are cumulative over the years.

Diet, stress, sleep, exercise and beauty routines all matter, and can all contribute to gorgeous skin as we get older.

Skin care regimes for different ages:

  • During your 20s: Focus on exfoliating daily and using a high-quality cleanser, plus moisturizing daily to keep the skin hydrated.
  • During your 30s: Start using nourishing, strengthening, collagen-supporting products.
  • During your 40s: This is the perfect time to use products that actively target visible signs of aging.
  • During your 50s and beyond: Continue to use targeted treatments while incorporating products that reduce muscle contractions to fight wrinkles, and that support volume.

All along, be sure to deeply hydrate, exfoliate and nourish, and wear your SPF!
