Composite Bonding
Composite bonding is probably the most conservative of all cosmetic treatments offered by our Leicester dentists at Glen Dental. The treatment involves minimum alteration to your original tooth (sometimes none at all) and then bonding of a composite filling to alter the shape or length or a tooth. Why do I need a filling?
You may need a filling for various reasons. Most often it is due to decay in a tooth or due to a broken tooth due to trauma or damage by biting into a hard food item or when biting onto a hard object. Excessive biting of fingernails or grinding of the teeth can also cause wear.
What is a composite white filling?
Composite fillings are usually resin-based and applied to a tooth in a mouldable form that can be moulded perfectly to your teeth to restore them. White fillings are popular because they can be carefully colour-matched to blend in, making it look more natural and life like without affecting your smile. Composite fillings can also be used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the colour of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth. Unlike amalgam fillings, a composite filling actually bonds to your tooth increasing its strength. Less removal of the tooth is required- although they may take slightly longer to place.
Are white fillings as good as amalgam fillings?
Previously, it was the case that although white fillings were better from a cosmetic perspective, they weren’t as strong as amalgam fillings. With advances in technology, the materials we use for white composite fillings are much stronger and comparable to silver amalgam. White fillings also tend to cause reduced sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks and do not corrode over time like amalgam fillings can. We would always discuss the life expectancy of a white filling with you before you proceed with any proposed treatment.
Should I replace my amalgam fillings with white fillings straight away?
We may recommend that you wait until your amalgam fillings need replacing before replacing them with white fillings. It will depend on your individual case, so we’d always suggest that you come in to Glen Dental for a free initial consultation.
Are there alternatives to fillings?
In some cases, an inlay/onlay or a crown/veneer may be a better way of repairing the appearance and function of a tooth. Again, it would depend on your individual case.
