Root Canal Treatment

Saving your teeth is our first choice

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the root canal system and could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort.

If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out.

Life benefits

  • Preservation of remaining healthy tooth structure
  • Prevention of infection spreading any further
  • Restoration of tooth to its natural look and feel

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING:

The area of the mouth to be treated is numbed by our Leicester dentists with a local anaesthetic and the infected tissue removed. The root canals are then cleaned out thoroughly to remove all infection and pulp with an antibacterial solution and if necessary an antibacterial dressing is placed within the tooth for around 1-2 weeks.

When adequately clean, the root canals are filled to prevent further bacteria from entering. The treated tooth is then sealed with a permanent filling or crown to restore its shape and functionality.

Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits. It may also be necessary to see an Endodontic Specialist for more complex cases.

AFTERCARE

CARING FOR YOUR TOOTH AFTER ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

During and immediately following treatment be careful not to bite down too hard on the tooth so that you don’t damage it. Whilst the tooth is undergoing treatment a temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth in between appointments and extra care will be needed when biting/chewing.

When looked after properly your root canal treated tooth should last for many years. Your Leicester Dentist will advise on the best way to restore your tooth after root canal treatment -initially with a strong filling and in the longer term with a crown or inlay/onlay.

In order to keep all of your teeth healthy it is important to maintain good oral hygiene- brushing and flossing teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day. Avoid eating too many sugary foods and visit your Leicester Dentist for regular dental health examinations.
